Former Fox News host further said he doesn’t ‘want to be a candidate’ for president and aired frustration with Trump Tucker Carlson , the rightwing broadcaster, wants to help build a new political party in the United States, he said in an interview – though he gave scant detail about the party, and did not indicate whether he was referring to a concrete project or merely musing. In the same interview, Carlson dismissed the idea of running for office as part of that new party. “I don’t want to be a candidate,” he said. Carlson, the former Fox News broadcaster turned podcast host, has made no secret of his frustration with the Trump administration and especially its war with Iran. In recent months he has expressed regret for formerly supporting Donald Trump , and just last week said that there was “no chance” he would support Republicans – or Democrats – in the midterm elections this November. He escalated that line of thought in an interview with the Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) published on Wednesday. “I do know what really matters is war and finance,” he said, suggesting that pro-Israel donors had pressured Trump into attacking Iran. And “on those questions, the parties are in lockstep solidarity with each other. His remarks to CJR contradict an interview with the New York Times, in May, in which he said :“[T]here should be a party that is speaking for most people. In the CJR interview, Carlson acknowledged having tried to personally talk Trump out of military intervention in Iran. That faction of the right – sometimes referred to as “America First”, to distinguish it from Trump’s “make America great again” – has also expressed frustration that Trump’s hardline immigration policies are not sufficiently radical. “I’m for less immigration,” Carlson told CJR. “In fact, I’m for ending all immigration today. I don’t know how you can justify immigration when half of all white-collar jobs are going away because of AI.
Victorian MP Moira Deeming has launched an 11th-hour court challenge against her own party before a meeting to decide her fate after she made an assault allegation against a former leader, AAP reports. Deeming has lodged a legal action against the Liberal’s Victorian president, Brian Loughnane , which is listed to be heard in the state supreme court this morning. Loughnane and other Liberal executives are planning to meet on Friday evening to determine Deeming’s candidacy after she made a police complaint against Matthew Guy , the opposition’s public transport spokesperson, alleging he put her in a “headlock” at a gala dinner on 23 May. Victoria police investigated the incident and found “there was no offence detected”. Guy has demanded a public apology from Deeming but she says she misunderstood the meaning of headlock and has refused to apologise. She has been invited to the state executive meeting to tell her side of the story. In a statement to AAP, Deeming’s lawyer said his client’s complaint was made “honestly, in good faith and only as a matter of last resort”.

Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee published a 55-page report Thursday accusing the group of aiding President Trump in turning America's milestone into a "hotbed of corruption and self-enrichment" through tactics that potentially amount to criminal fraud. It's titled "From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People out of their 250th Birthday." Rep. Jared Huffman of California, the ranking Democrat on the committee, told NPR that the report was months in the making. It is based on interviews with unnamed whistleblowers, sworn Congressional testimony, internal Freedom 250 documents and other written responses. "We put it all together to really tell the story … of how Donald Trump hijacked what should have been a unifying national celebration and repurposed it for his own interests," Huffman said in a Zoom interview. It was created via executive order last year, and describes itself as "the national, non-partisan organization leading the celebration of our Nation's 250th birthday." But it's not the only one: Congress had created a nonpartisan commission called America250 for this same purpose in 2016. It is not clear where that directive came from: Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, who serves as ex officio director of the foundation's board, testified before Congress in May that he was "not aware of the final decision maker on Freedom 250." That same month, he told CNN the organization is "run out of the White House." In any case, Freedom 250 emerged with more visibility and more federal funding than America250. Alvarez, of Freedom 250, says it "stepped in to rescue our nation's 250th birthday from years of wasted time, wasted money, and failed planning." But the report argues it supplanted America250 "through a series of diversions and misrepresentations that drained the chartered Commission of the resources it needed to function." The report says Congress allocated $150 million in federal funds last year to the Interior Department for events celebrating the 250th anniversary, with the "understanding" that $100 million of that would go to America250.
