Opposition’s letter to CJI: BJP alleges ‘dangerous conspiracy’ to malign Indian democracy

Reacting sharply to a letter written by 23 Opposition parties, including the Congress, to the Chief Justice of India , alleging “biased” conduct by the Election Commission and questioning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, BJP MP and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi described the move as an “attack on democracy”. “The language and tone used in the letter are reminiscent of the arrogant attitude witnessed during the Emergency,” said Mr. Trivedi. He said the SIR process had already been held to be completely reasonable and lawful by various courts. “From the constitutional point of view, they have failed to place any factual matter before the court,” he said. “Is it not true that senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor remarked on a television programme that the Congress benefited from SIR in Kerala? He claimed that the Congress’ electoral setbacks were the result of its lack of effort at the grassroots level and organisational weaknesses, whereas the BJP’s top leaders regularly engaged with party workers on the ground. Trivedi also accused the Congress of insulting its own cadre by questioning their loyalty in Gujarat.
